Welcome!

Welcome to Trope of the Month, a comm for fanworks with a different theme each month.

Rules:
1. Stick to the theme
2. Tag your posts (and use the posting template)
3. Don't be a dick

Otherwise, have fun!

FAQ

How does this work?

At the start of each month a post will go up introducing the "trope of the month". You then have until the end of the month to create and post as many fanworks as you like involving that trope or theme.

What kinds of fanworks are allowed?

Any kind! Fic, art, podfic, icons, vids, fanmixes, crafts, meta, interpretive dance... as long as it fits the theme it's fine.

Is there a minimum length/size/etc?

No. If you're inspired to write a bunch of three sentence fics, go ahead, though in that case I'd prefer you group them into one post rather than post them all separately.

How many works can I post?

As many as you want, though if you're posting multiple works at once please combine them into a single post.

Are Original Works okay?

Sure, as long as they fit the theme, though there might be a few themes where Original Work would unfortunately fall outside the scope - Canon Divergence, for example.

Will there be prompts?

Prompts are entirely optional, but can be left in the comments of each theme's announcement post.

For ease of reading, please list your prompts in the format:

Medium:
Fandom:
Characters/Pairings:
Prompt:
Open to gifting Yes/No:

If you pick yes for the last option, please specify which archives out of AO3/SquidgeWorld/Ad Astra/etc you are willing to be gifted on and list your username(s).

How do I fill a prompt?

Just post to the comm as you would normally do so, but make sure to fill in the Prompt section of the template with the prompt you're filling.

Do I have to claim a prompt if I want to use it?

No, you don't have to claim the prompt in any way, and there's no limit to the number of people who can create for a single prompt.

Do I have to use a prompt?

No, they're entirely optional.

How do I post to the comm?

You must have a Dreamwidth account and be a member of the comm to post to it. First post your work to your preferred site (personal Dreamwidth, personal website, AO3, SquidgeWorld, Ad Astra, ff.net, other archive, Tumblr, etc), then click the Post button at the top of the comm and fill in the template below:

Title:
Creator:
Fandom:
Characters/Pairings:
Rating:
Word Count:
Prompt:
Summary:
Warnings:
Link to work:

If you are creating art or other works without a word count, feel free to ignore that line.

A note on Prompts: The "Prompt" line is for listing a prompt you are filling from the prompt post. If you are not using a prompt from the prompt post, you can leave that line off or just list it as N/A.

Your post title should be in the format: Work Title, Medium, Fandom for a single work, or Medium/Media, Fandom(s) for multiple works. (E.g. Fun and Games, Fanfic, MCU or Icons, MCU, Harry Potter)

Please tag your post with the medium, fandom, and theme you're creating for. There are six tags for medium; m: art, m: fic, m: icons, m: podfic, m: vids, and m: other. Fandom should be the format f: fandom, e.g. f: mcu. Theme should be in the format t: theme, e.g. t: first times. Where possible, please use already existing tags instead of creating new ones.

A screenshot of an example post is here.

Do we have to use warnings?

No. Warnings are encouraged, but not mandatory. Click at your own risk.

Does the work need to be new?

Yes. Stuff you created earlier is okay if it's previously unposted, but previously posted works aren't really what this comm is for.

Can I post recs?

Not directly, but if you have any theme-based recs you'd like to share they can be posted as comments to each theme's introduction post.

If my work fits another fest/bingo/etc, can I use it for both?

Sure, if it's okay with them.

What if I don't finish my work before the end of the month?

January and July will be amnesty months, where people can create for any previous theme.

Can I suggest a theme/trope?

Yes, but you'll have to work for it! A creator who both creates more than one fanwork for a single month AND creates the most fanworks for that month will be able to suggest a future theme.

What if I have a question that's not answered here?

You can leave a comment here (anonymous commenting is on), or PM the mod account [personal profile] trope_mod.

Hi! I was just wondering, how strictly do we have to adhere to the prompt? For example, for the prompt “last times”, can we write about how characters thought something was the last time but it wasn’t?

Is it okay to just post (short, under a cut) fic directly to the comm instead of linking to an archive?
